Maternal Health

98% of mothers received antenatal care from skilled provider at least once. 

Even though ANC is nearly universal, only 1 in 4 women make their 1st antenatal care visits during the 1st trimester of pregnancy and half of pregnant women

        make 4 or more ANC visits during their pregnancy, as recommended.

Women attending 4+ ANC visits has decreased from 62% in 2004-05 to 43% in 2011-12 and slightly increase to 51% in 2015/2016.

Two-thirds of births in Tanzania take place in a health facility. 64% of births are delivered by a skilled provider.

Delivery in a health facility is more common in urban mainland areas (86%) than in rural mainland areas (55%) where more than 65% of population is lives. 

Despite of 64% births are delivered by skilled provider, only 34% of women and 42% of newborns received a postnatal checkup within 2 days of birth.


Mortality

Child Mortality

Childhood mortality has decreased over the past two decades.  Current under-5 mortality rate is 67 deaths per 1,000 live births, infant mortality rate is 43 deaths per          1,000 live births and neonatal mortality is 25 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Between 2010 -2015/16 under five mortality declined from 81 deaths per 1,000 live births to 67. Infant mortality declined from 51 deaths per 1,000 live births to 43              while neonatal mortality declined only from 26 deaths per 1,000 live births to 25.


Maternal mortality

Maternal Mortality ratio remains unchanging. Currently, the estimated ratio is 556 deaths per 100,000 live births it is higher than the ratio reported in the 2010 TDHS         454 deaths per 100,000 live births.
